Backyard coops are smaller coops often surrounded by a fence (sometimes made with chicken wire) to allow the chickens an area to roam, peck, and hunt insects, while contained. Sometimes this type of “yarding” is mobile, and takes the form of chicken tractors.Chicken Coop Plans

A chicken coop is a building where chickens are kept. Interiors usually have nest boxes for egg laying, and also perches for the birds to sleep on. Coops for meat birds often have neither of these features. There may also be an attached outdoor run, and both the interior and exterior floor of the chicken coop is often covered with a material, such as straw or wood chips, to contain the chicken waste and to allow easier cleanup of the chicken coop. Most have some kind of ventilation to help air out any odors that may occur.Chicken Coop Plans

Element #2. - Using Sound Judgment:

When designing your chicken coop structure, you must use sound judgment in almost every aspect of the way.

For instance, you want to use building materials in which the cleaning and disinfecting procedures will be quick and easy. The doors you install should open inwards, not outwards. You don’t want your chickens roosting on your windows, so it is best to install sliding windows.

Chicken Cage 2 Aviary Type

August 19, 2009 - 4:56 pm No Comments

If you can’t hear what I’m saying, sorry, I’ll put it in. It started getting windy out and my digital camera doesn’t process wind well and cuts all other noise out closest to the camera.

This is an aviary I bought from a lady off of craigslist.com for $30 or so. Her friend made it for zebra finches. It needs a dremel on the wire edges because she didn’t file it down and it’s ungodly sharp if you happen to rub against it. I know from many personal experiences.

This cage can easily keep a banty pair, and a single large or banty chicken. Has room for tail turn around for several breeds. Safe, secure, yet open to view everything and walk around.

Dimensions:

Aviary

49″ long
24″ wide
36 1/2″ tall

Door

12″ long (including wood frame)
14″ tall (including wood frame)

It has one hinge and one pull spring latch and eye for door latch.

This one is bound together by the oh so wonderful zip ties, my best friends. The lady that made it staple gunned the wire mesh to the wood with bad, small staples and they started popping out soon after I got it. I just pulled the wire frames together with zip ties and viola, it’s much sturdier, tighter and reliable. Yes, it may look a little silly, but I can stand silly if it keeps my flock safe. Cats and other larger predators can’t get in.

It had a plastic seed guard around the entire bottom of the cage, which also wasn’t thought out well to keep it on long term. It easily came off, but it’s not needed here. The bottom of the cage is thick wood so nothing is going to dig in for your birds. The bottom is very well secured.

I have used this for all my chicks for their first time going outside because they’re safe and nothing can get them and they have open sight of the rest of the flock, cats, dogs, happenings on the yard to get them used to everything, yet they have room to walk around and you can put a perch in (I used a board and put it partially on the ground and the other side leaning against part of the wooden frame). But a perch can be easily installed at any height with large sized wire.

I have also put atiels out here and it houses them well.

Any questions, ask!

Happy cage building!
